• 200ml milk 
  •  100ml single cream
  • 50g dark chocolate
  •  1 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp dark brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp ginger
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • zest of 1/2 an orange
  • 50ml of spiced dark rum (optional)


PREP TIME : 10 mins. Makes 2.

This isn’t just any hot chocolate. This is the luxurious, smooth, spiced, warming hug in a mug you want at Christmas. Add marshmallows, cream, a flake, whatever you want. Cos it’s Christmas. And it’s magical. Maybe leave out the rum if you’re making it for kids. Or don’t. It’s Christmas.


Put the milk & cream in a sauce pan over a gentle heat until steaming.

Turn down the heat and break up the chocolate. Add the chocolate to the pan with the spices, orange zest, sugar & cocoa powder.

Whisk until smooth and the hot chocolate starts to darken in colour and become silky, try not to let it boil.

Add the rum if using, and pour in to 2 mugs.

Turn up Michael Buble and enjoy.
